Efforts of Başkent EDAŞ to supply safe energy during the flood

Electricity distribution teams that had to cut the energy for safety purposes during the flood in the Western Black Sea region re-energized the region once the impacts of the flood have diminished and the faults were repaired

Başkent Elektrik Dağıtım A.Ş. (Başkent EDAŞ) put all efforts to prevent electrocution that may happen due to the flood occurred at the weekend in the coastal districts of Zonguldak, Bartın and Kastamonu and to repair the grid elements damaged by the landslide.

Sustaining its preparations as part of the emergency plans developed for the disasters such as heavy snowfall and rainfall, which has become more frequent in the Western Black Sea region in recent years, Başkent EDAŞ has alerted its teams in line with the weather forecasts.

On Saturday, the impacts of the flood started to show up and the teams had to de-energize the region for precautionary purposes to protect the safety of lives and properties in the region, as the rising waters might have caused electrocution.

1000 employees and 400 vehicles alert on the field

As part of the disaster plans, the number of field workers and the number of vehicles exceeded 1000 and 400, respectively, in a short time, together with the supporting teams from other provinces, and the impact of the flood on electricity supply increased due to the interruptions on the national transmission lines.

In the meantime, Başkent EDAŞ teams cleaned the water, debris and alluvions entering the transformer buildings in the flooded areas, rehabilitated/replaced the tilted or collapsed poles and repaired the broken conductors. The teams initiated the process of cleaning the damaged meters at the entrances of the buildings and replacing the defective ones swiftly.

Başkent EDAŞ sustained its fault detection activities by means of the latest technology and used drones (UAVs), which have been lately used in the higher parts of the Western Black Sea region where dense forests make it difficult for people to access.

Roads re-opened by excavators and cranes; generators put into use

Opening some of the blocked roads due to landslides over their routes to the transformers with excavators, Başkent EDAŞ teams also used cranes to lift the trees that fell over the lines and the poles damaged due to the flood.

Working in coordination with public institutions, the company energized the pumps to drain flood water and feed the network with generators.

While the impact of rainfall diminished as of the early hours of Monday morning, the flood impact gradually decreased throughout the day. Once the energy cuts in the national transmission lines were also repaired, Başkent EDAŞ teams began to re-energize the region, starting from the safer areas.

While the efforts of Başkent EDAŞ teams greatly reduced the number of de-energized transformers as of Monday afternoon, no de-energized transformers were left on Tuesday morning thanks to the intense efforts carried out at night.
