About Başkent EDAŞ

Our History

In 1994, Turkish Electricity Authority (TEK) was restructured and divided into two separate Public Economic Enterprises; namely TEAŞ (Türkiye Elektrik Üretim İletim A.Ş. – Turkish Electricity Generation and Transmission Corporation) and TEDAŞ (Türkiye Elektrik Dağıtım A.Ş. – Turkish Electricity Distribution Company) with the decision of the Council of Ministers. In line with the decision of the Council of Ministers, TEDAŞ became a legal entity. The very same year, Ankara and Kırıkkale Electricity Distribution Institutions, institutions of TEDAŞ operating at a provincial scale, were transformed into Başkent Elektrik Dağıtım Anonim Şirketi (Başkent EDAŞ), a subsidiary of TEDAŞ.

On October 3, 1995, Başkent EDAŞ was registered with Trade Registry ID of 50388 in line with the decision of the Higher Planning Council and began its operations as a legal entity. In 2004, Başkent EDAŞ was included to the privatisation plan through block sales method of 100% of the shares by Turkish Prime Ministry Privatisation Administration as part of the provisions of Law on Privatisation Practices (Law no. 4046). As of 2005, Kastamonu Electricity Distribution Institution was affiliated to Başkent EDAŞ. Karaelmas EDAŞ was merged with Başkent EDAŞ. With the regions included to the structure of Başkent EDAŞ, the company covered one of the largest distribution regions in Turkey that serves 7 provinces, i.e., Ankara, Bartın, Çankırı, Karabük, Kastamonu, Kırıkkale and Zonguldak.

On July 1, 2008, Sabancı Verbund joint venture was awarded the privatisation tender conducted by the method of block selling 100 percent shares of Başkent EDAŞ. On January 28, 2009, Enerjisa Elektrik Dağıtım A.Ş. took over the shares of Başkent EDAŞ.

In accordance with the "Procedures and Principles Regarding the Legal Separation of Distribution and Retail Activities" approved by the Energy Market Regulatory Authority, Başkent EDAŞ separated the distribution, retail and retail services within the Başkent Distribution Region covering Ankara, Kırıkkale, Çankırı, Kastamonu, Zonguldak, Bartın and Karabük provinces, on December 31, 2012.
